Seafood
Lowcountry seafood — she-crab soup, shrimp and grits, steamed oysters — is the island's defining cuisine.
Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks has been a Hilton Head institution since 1967 — the shrimp come off the boats that dock directly behind the restaurant, and the she-crab soup is the standard against which all others on the island are measured. Skull Creek Boathouse is the island's most beloved casual seafood spot, with a dock bar, sunset views over Skull Creek, and a menu that covers everything from raw oysters to whole fried flounder. Fishcamp on Broad Creek has a genuine Lowcountry fish camp feel that's less touristy than the north end spots. The Crazy Crab has two locations and a loyal following for its steamed seafood platters.
Local tip
Hudson's and Skull Creek Boathouse both have long waits on summer evenings — arrive before 5:30 PM or put your name in and walk the docks while you wait.
Waterfront dining
Harbour Town, Shelter Cove, and Skull Creek offer the island's best waterfront dining settings.
Skull Creek on the north end has the best sunset views — Hudson's and Skull Creek Boathouse both face west over the creek. Shelter Cove Harbour has the most variety, anchored by Poseidon at the upscale end and Margarita Republic for casual waterfront drinks. Harbour Town in Sea Pines is the most scenic setting — the Quarterdeck has the best table position directly facing the lighthouse and yacht basin. The Salty Dog Cafe at South Beach Marina is the island's most iconic outdoor dining spot.
Local tip
Sunset at Harbour Town is a genuine event — the plaza fills with people every evening in season. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset for a good spot.
Breakfast & brunch
The island's breakfast scene is anchored by a handful of local spots that year-round residents swear by.
Skillets Cafe & Grill has been the island's go-to breakfast spot for years — the shrimp and grits breakfast version is the best on the island, and the wait on weekend mornings is a reliable indicator of quality. Eggs Up Grill is a reliable option with consistent quality and shorter waits than Skillets on busy mornings. For brunch, One Hot Mama's does a weekend brunch menu that's worth the trip. The Hilton Head Diner is a local institution for early risers, open from 6 AM.
Local tip
Skillets fills up by 9 AM on summer weekends. Arrive at 8 AM or plan for a 20–30 minute wait. The outdoor seating fills first.
Family friendly
Casual, kid-welcoming restaurants where the whole family can eat well without stress.
The Salty Dog Cafe at South Beach Marina is the island's most iconic family dining spot — the outdoor seating, the marina setting, and the casual atmosphere make it a reliable choice for families with young children. Reilley's Grill & Bar has a solid kids' menu and a relaxed atmosphere. Giuseppi's Pizza & Pasta is a local favorite for families — the wood-fired pizza is excellent and the portions are generous. For a quick and easy family meal, the Coligny Beach area has several casual spots within walking distance of the beach.
Local tip
The Salty Dog Cafe has a gift shop that children love — budget extra time. Most family-friendly restaurants on the island accept walk-ins, but reservations are recommended in July and August.
Fine dining
The island's most ambitious kitchens — worth the reservation for a special occasion.
Michael Anthony's is the island's most consistently excellent upscale restaurant — the menu changes seasonally, the wine list is well-curated, and the service is polished without being stiff. Poseidon at Shelter Cove has a beautiful room, a serious cocktail program, and a menu that leans into local seafood with real technique. Frankie Bones does hand-cut steaks and housemade pasta with one of the best wine lists on the island. For a special occasion dinner, the private dining room at Michael Anthony's is worth asking about.
Local tip
Reservations at Michael Anthony's and Poseidon book out 2–3 weeks in advance in peak season (May–August). Call or book online as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Pizza
Wood-fired and New York-style pizza from a handful of local spots that locals return to regularly.
Giuseppi's Pizza & Pasta is the island's most beloved pizza spot — the wood-fired oven produces a properly charred crust, and the toppings are generous without being excessive. The pasta is also worth ordering. Mellow Mushroom at Coligny Plaza is a reliable option with a good selection of craft beers and a fun atmosphere. For New York-style slices, Frankie Bones does a credible job and is a good option for a quick lunch.
Local tip
Giuseppi's doesn't take reservations — arrive before 6 PM on summer evenings or expect a wait. The outdoor seating is pleasant in the shoulder season.
Burgers
From casual beach-town burgers to serious smash burgers, the island has options at every level.
Reilley's Grill & Bar has been the island's go-to burger spot for years — the half-pound burger is properly seasoned and the fries are excellent. The bar atmosphere makes it a good choice for a casual dinner after a day on the water. Skull Creek Boathouse does a solid burger alongside its seafood menu. For something more upscale, the burger at One Hot Mama's uses local beef and is worth ordering even in a restaurant known for its BBQ.
Local tip
Reilley's is one of the few island restaurants that stays open late on weekends — useful if you're coming off a late dolphin tour or sunset sail.
Italian
From wood-fired pizza to proper pasta, the island's Italian options are better than you'd expect.
Giuseppi's Pizza & Pasta is the island's best Italian restaurant — the wood-fired pizza is the draw, but the pasta dishes are equally good. The carbonara and the seafood linguine are both worth ordering. Frankie Bones is a more upscale Italian-American option with a broader menu covering steaks, seafood, and pasta alongside the Italian classics. The bar program at Frankie Bones is also strong.
Local tip
Giuseppi's is the local favorite — the wood-fired oven makes a real difference in the pizza quality. The pasta portions are generous enough to share as a starter.
Mexican
Tacos, margaritas, and Tex-Mex classics from a handful of casual spots across the island.
Serg's Mexican Kitchen & Bar is the island's most established Mexican restaurant — part of the well-regarded Serg Restaurant Group that has operated on Hilton Head for years. The menu covers tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and classic Tex-Mex with strong margaritas and a casual, lively atmosphere. Amigo's Cafe y Cantina is a more traditional Tex-Mex option with a loyal local following — the fajitas and the queso are both excellent. Margarita Republic at Shelter Cove is a reliable option for frozen margaritas and casual Mexican food in a waterfront setting.
Local tip
Serg's fills up on summer evenings — arrive before 6:30 PM or plan for a short wait. The margaritas are strong and the portions are generous.
Outdoor dining
The island's climate makes outdoor dining possible most of the year — here are the best settings.
The Salty Dog Cafe at South Beach Marina has the island's most iconic outdoor dining area — the marina setting, the string lights, and the casual atmosphere make it a natural choice for a warm evening. Skull Creek Boathouse's dock bar is the best spot for a casual outdoor drink with a view. Harbour Town's waterfront restaurants all have outdoor seating with marina views. For a more refined outdoor dining experience, the terrace at Poseidon at Shelter Cove is worth requesting.
Local tip
Outdoor dining in July and August can be hot and humid — the best outdoor spots have ceiling fans or misters. The shoulder season (May, September, October) is ideal for outdoor dining on the island.
Live music
From The Jazz Corner to waterfront dock bars, live music is woven into the island's dining scene.
The Jazz Corner at the Village at Wexford is the island's premier live music dining venue — national touring jazz acts Tuesday through Sunday, two shows nightly, with an excellent cocktail program and a room that takes the music seriously. Reservations are essential on weekends and for featured acts. The Salty Dog Cafe has live music on the outdoor stage most evenings in season. Skull Creek Boathouse has live music on the dock bar on weekends. The Shelter Cove Tuesday Night Concert Series (May–September) is free and draws a large crowd.
Local tip
The Jazz Corner books up weeks in advance for featured acts — check the calendar and reserve early. The cover charge ($10–$25) is worth it for a good act.
Happy hour
The island's best happy hour deals — discounted drinks and bar bites from 4 to 6 PM.
Skull Creek Boathouse has one of the island's best happy hours — half-price oysters, discounted appetizers, and reduced cocktail prices with a waterfront view. Poseidon at Shelter Cove does a sophisticated happy hour with discounted cocktails and a curated bar bites menu. Reilley's Grill & Bar has a straightforward happy hour with discounted drafts and well drinks. The Quarterdeck at Harbour Town offers happy hour pricing on the outdoor deck with marina views.
