Hilton Head Island Itineraries

3 Days, 5 Days & 7 Days — Realistic Routes Built by Locals

Whether you have a long weekend or a full week, these day-by-day itineraries take the guesswork out of planning. Each route is built around real places, practical timing, and the kind of local knowledge that makes a trip memorable.

The Essential Weekend

3-Day Hilton Head Itinerary

Three days is enough to hit the island's highlights — a great beach, a round of golf or a water tour, Harbour Town, and a proper Lowcountry meal. This route keeps driving minimal and leaves room to breathe.

Day 1

Arrive, Settle In & Coligny Beach

Morning — Arrive & Coligny Beach

Check in to your rental or hotel, then head straight to Coligny Beach Park — the island's most accessible public beach with seasonal paid parking (Memorial Day–Labor Day), restrooms, and a lively plaza nearby. Stake out your spot early, especially in summer. Spend the morning in the water or walking the shoreline south toward Forest Beach.

Local tip: Coligny Beach Park opens at 6 AM. Arrive before 9 AM in peak season to get a parking spot without circling.

Midday — Coligny Plaza Lunch

Walk across to Coligny Plaza for lunch. Skillets Café & Bar is a local favorite for casual plates and strong cocktails. Alternatively, grab a sandwich from Stu's Surfside Subs if you want to eat back on the beach.

Afternoon — Bike the South End

Rent bikes from one of the south-end outfitters and ride the paved trail network through Sea Pines and along the beach road. The trails are flat, shaded, and well-marked. Plan about 2 hours for a leisurely loop.

Local tip: Bike rentals are available at multiple locations near Coligny. Most shops rent by the hour or full day.

Evening — Harbour Town Sunset

Drive or bike to Harbour Town in Sea Pines for the iconic lighthouse and marina sunset. Climb the Harbour Town Lighthouse for panoramic views, then settle in at one of the waterfront restaurants for dinner. Quarterdeck at Harbour Town is the classic choice for drinks on the water.

Day 2

Water, Wildlife & Lowcountry Dining

Morning — Dolphin or Kayak Tour

Book a morning dolphin tour or guided kayak excursion through the salt marshes. Both depart from Shelter Cove Marina or Broad Creek Marina. Dolphin tours run about 90 minutes; kayak tours through the marsh channels run 2–3 hours. Book at least a day ahead in summer.

Local tip: Morning tours (8–10 AM) offer calmer water and better wildlife sightings than afternoon departures.

Midday — Shelter Cove Towne Centre

After your tour, browse Shelter Cove Towne Centre for lunch and a bit of shopping. The waterfront setting is relaxed and walkable. Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks is nearby for a proper Lowcountry seafood lunch.

Afternoon — Driessen Beach or Folly Field

Spend the afternoon at Driessen Beach Park or Folly Field Beach — both mid-island beaches are less crowded than Coligny and have good parking. Driessen has a playground and picnic area if you're traveling with kids.

Evening — Fine Dining

Tonight is the night for a proper dinner. The Sage Room, One Hot Mama's, and Skull Creek Boathouse are all strong choices depending on your mood — upscale Southern, casual BBQ, or waterfront seafood. Make a reservation the morning of.

Day 3

Golf, History & Departure

Morning — Golf or Pinckney Island

If you golf, squeeze in a morning round — tee times before 8 AM are cooler and often cheaper. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and Shipyard Golf Club both offer visitor access. Non-golfers should drive to Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge for a free, quiet morning walk through maritime forest and tidal flats.

Midday — Gullah Museum & Lunch

Stop at the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island for a short but meaningful visit — it's appointment-preferred, so call ahead. Then grab lunch at one of the local spots on William Hilton Parkway before heading out.

Afternoon — Depart

Most vacation rentals check out by 10–11 AM; hotels by noon. If you have a late flight, store luggage at your accommodation and spend the final hours at a beach or browsing the Village at Wexford.

Rainy-Day Alternatives

  • Arts Center of Coastal Carolina — live performances and gallery exhibitions
  • Sandbox Children's Museum — ideal for families with young kids
  • Hilton Head Brewing Company or Local Legend Brewing — afternoon taproom visit
  • Coligny Plaza and Village at Wexford — covered shopping and dining
  • Spa day at one of the resort spas — book same-day if slots are open

Planning Tips for Every Trip

Book in Advance

Golf tee times, dolphin tours, fishing charters, and popular restaurants fill up fast in summer. Book at least 2–3 days ahead for activities and a week ahead for dining.

Getting Around

A car is useful but not essential if you're staying in Sea Pines or near Coligny. The island's paved trail network covers most of the south end by bike. Uber and Lyft are available but can be slow in peak season.

Best Time to Visit

April–May and September–October offer the best combination of warm weather, manageable crowds, and lower prices. July and August are peak season — busier and hotter but full of energy.

Beach Parking

Coligny Beach Park has the most parking but fills by 9 AM in summer. Seasonal fees apply Memorial Day through Labor Day (~$2/hr, $10/day max). Driessen Beach and Folly Field also charge seasonal fees but rarely fill. Alder Lane Beach Access is free year-round with limited spaces.

Sea Pines Day Pass

Non-guests entering Sea Pines pay a $10 day pass at the gate. It's worth it for Harbour Town and South Beach. The pass covers the entire plantation for the day.

Afternoon Storms

Summer afternoons often bring brief thunderstorms. Plan outdoor activities for the morning and save indoor options — shopping, breweries, restaurants — for the 2–4 PM window.
