Skull Creek and the north end
The north end of Hilton Head Island, along Skull Creek, has the island's most concentrated collection of waterfront dining. The views here look west across the creek toward Pinckney Island, making this the best area on the island for sunset dining. Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks and Skull Creek Boathouse anchor the strip — both are walk-in only, so arrive before 5:30 PM in summer. Skull Creek Dockside next door has more of a bar scene and is a good option for a casual drink before dinner.
Shelter Cove Harbour
Shelter Cove Harbour is the island's most active marina dining destination, with multiple restaurants surrounding the boat slips. Poseidon anchors the upscale end with a serious cocktail program and local seafood done with real technique. Margarita Republic handles the casual end with frozen margaritas and a lively outdoor atmosphere. The harbour hosts a summer concert series on Tuesday evenings — dining here becomes a natural combination of food, music, and waterfront ambiance.
Harbour Town and Sea Pines
Harbour Town, at the southern tip of Sea Pines Resort, offers a more refined waterfront dining experience. The Quarterdeck has the best table-on-the-water position, directly facing the lighthouse and yacht basin. The Crazy Crab at Harbour Town is the better of its two island locations for views. Access to Sea Pines requires a gate fee for non-resort guests ($10), but the setting — lighthouse, sailboats, live oaks — is one of the most beautiful marina environments on the East Coast.
Tips for waterfront dining
Waterfront tables are the most sought-after seats on the island, especially at sunset. Skull Creek Boathouse and Hudson's don't take reservations — arrive before 5:30 PM or put your name in and walk the docks. Poseidon and the Quarterdeck do take reservations and book out 1–2 weeks in advance in summer. Most waterfront restaurants are casual to smart casual — flip flops are fine at dock bars, resort casual is appropriate at Poseidon. Parking near Shelter Cove and Harbour Town is limited in peak season; arriving by bike is a genuine option on this island.
