Seasonal beach access calendar

Hilton Head's dog beach rules follow a strict seasonal schedule tied to peak visitor season and sea turtle nesting. The rules apply to all public beaches on the island — Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field, Alder Lane, Burkes Beach, Fish Haul, and Mitchelville.

Peak season

Memorial Day weekend – Labor Day

Dogs allowed

Before 10 AM and after 5 PM

Prohibited

10 AM – 5 PM

Leash

Required at all times

Dogs are prohibited on the beach between 10 AM and 5 PM during peak season. Outside those hours — early morning and evening — dogs are welcome on all public beaches. Leash required at all times.

Tip: The best dog beach window in summer is 6–9 AM. The beach is cooler, less crowded, and your dog can enjoy a full walk before the 10 AM cutoff.

Sea turtle nesting season

May 1 – October 31

Dogs allowed

Subject to peak-season hours if applicable

Prohibited

Dogs must not disturb nesting sites or hatchlings

Leash

Required at all times

Sea turtle nesting season runs May through October. Nesting sites are marked with stakes and tape — keep dogs well away from marked areas. Disturbing a sea turtle nest is a federal offense. Dogs on leash are otherwise permitted during the standard seasonal windows.

Tip: If your dog shows interest in a marked nest area, redirect immediately. Hatchlings emerge at night — avoid the beach after dark near marked nesting sites during August and September.

Off-season

Day after Labor Day – Day before Memorial Day weekend

Dogs allowed

All hours

Leash

Required at all times

Dogs are welcome on all public beaches at all hours during the off-season. Leash required at all times. This is the best time of year to bring your dog to Hilton Head — the beaches are quieter and the weather is mild.

Tip: October through April is ideal for dog beach visits. Temperatures are comfortable for dogs, the sand is uncrowded, and you can walk for miles without the summer restrictions.

Rules that apply year-round

  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times on the beach and in all public areas
  • Owners must clean up after their pets — waste bags are available at most beach access points
  • Dogs must not disturb sea turtle nesting sites (marked with stakes and tape)
  • Violations can result in fines — the Town actively enforces beach rules during peak season
  • Rules apply to all public beaches; private plantation beaches (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, etc.) may have additional restrictions

Pet-friendly vacation rentals

Many vacation rental properties on Hilton Head accept pets, though policies and fees vary significantly. Here's what to know before you book.

Always confirm the pet policy directly with the property or rental manager before booking — not all listings that appear as 'pet-friendly' accept all sizes or breeds.

Most pet-friendly rentals charge a non-refundable pet fee ($50–$200 is typical) or a refundable pet deposit. Ask whether it's refundable before booking.

Properties in Forest Beach, Folly Field, and non-gated communities tend to have more pet-friendly options than the gated resort communities (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard).

Some properties have weight limits (often 25–50 lbs) or breed restrictions. Confirm these specifics if you have a large or restricted breed.

If you're staying in a resort community, check the plantation's own pet policy in addition to the rental property's policy — some plantations have island-wide rules that apply regardless of the rental.

Dog-friendly dining & services

Dog-friendly dining patios

Several restaurants on Hilton Head allow leashed dogs on their outdoor patios. Policies vary and can change seasonally — always call ahead to confirm before bringing your dog.

  • Call ahead — outdoor patio dog policies can change by season, health inspection cycle, or management decision. Don't assume a patio is dog-friendly without confirming.
  • Dogs must remain leashed and under control at all times on restaurant patios. Most restaurants ask that dogs stay on the floor, not on chairs or benches.
  • Coligny Plaza and Shelter Cove Towne Centre both have outdoor seating areas where dogs are generally welcome in the common areas (not necessarily at every restaurant).

Is there an off-leash dog park on Hilton Head Island?

Yes. Chaplin Community Park (11 Cast Net Drive) has the island's only dedicated off-leash dog park, with separate fenced areas for large dogs (25+ lbs) and small dogs (under 25 lbs). Water stations and waste bag dispensers are provided. The park is free and open dawn to dusk daily.

What are the leash rules on Hilton Head Island?

Dogs must be on a leash at all times in all public areas on Hilton Head Island — including beaches, parks, trails, and sidewalks. The only exception is inside the fenced dog park at Chaplin Community Park. Violations can result in fines. The Town actively enforces leash rules during peak season.

Can I take my dog to Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge?

Yes. Leashed dogs are welcome on all trails at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, located just off the island on the Bluffton side of the bridge. The refuge has 4+ miles of unpaved trails through salt marsh, freshwater ponds, and maritime forest. Keep dogs on a short leash near water — alligators are present.

Are there pet-friendly vacation rentals on Hilton Head?

Yes — many vacation rental properties accept pets, though policies and fees vary. Properties in Forest Beach and Folly Field tend to have more pet-friendly options than the gated resort communities.

What is the best time of year to visit Hilton Head with a dog?

October through April is ideal. The off-season means dogs are allowed on the beach at all hours, temperatures are comfortable for dogs, the beaches are uncrowded, and parking is easy and often free. If you visit in summer, plan beach time for early morning (before 10 AM) or evening (after 5 PM).

Are dogs allowed in Sea Pines or other plantation communities?

Each private plantation community (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, Port Royal) has its own pet policy. Most require leashes throughout the plantation and on plantation beaches. Some have additional restrictions. Check with the specific resort before bringing your dog — plantation rules apply in addition to Town rules.
