Free Things to Do on Hilton Head Island

Some of the best experiences on Hilton Head Island cost nothing at all. Here's where to start.

01

Free beach access

All of Hilton Head's public beaches are free to access. The island has twelve miles of Atlantic shoreline with multiple public access points, each with free parking (though lots fill quickly in summer). Coligny Beach Park, Driessen Beach Park, Islanders Beach Park, and Fish Haul Creek Beach Park are the main public access points. Arrive early on summer weekends to secure parking. The beach itself — the sand, the surf, the sea oats, the views — costs nothing.

02

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most underrated free destinations in the Lowcountry. Located just off the island on US-278, the refuge encompasses more than 4,000 acres of salt marsh, maritime forest, and freshwater ponds. The trail network is open daily from sunrise to sunset, free of charge, and offers excellent birding, wildlife photography, and peaceful walking. White ibis, great blue herons, alligators, and white-tailed deer are commonly spotted. No vehicle access is permitted inside the refuge — visitors park at the entrance and walk or bike in.

03

Outdoor concerts and free events

From late spring through early fall, free live music fills the outdoor stages at Coligny Plaza and Shelter Cove Harbour on a near-weekly basis. The Shelter Cove Harbour summer concert series runs most Tuesday evenings. Coligny Plaza hosts free events throughout the season, including movie nights, art shows, and holiday celebrations. The Hilton Head Island farmers markets are free to browse and a good way to spend a morning. Check local event listings for current schedules.

04

Bike paths and nature trails

Hilton Head's 60-plus miles of paved bike paths are free to use and connect most of the island's major destinations. Walking or cycling the paths through Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, and the mid-island neighborhoods is one of the best ways to experience the island's natural beauty without spending a dollar. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve charges a small vehicle entry fee, but the preserve's interior trails are accessible by bike or on foot from the path network at no additional cost.
