Hilton Head Island Travel Tips

A few pieces of local knowledge can make the difference between a good trip and a great one. Here's what to know before you arrive.

01

When to visit

Hilton Head Island is a year-round destination, but the experience changes significantly by season. Spring (March through May) offers mild weather, lower crowds, and the RBC Heritage golf tournament in April. Summer (June through August) is peak season — the beaches are at their best, but crowds are heavy, prices are high, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall (September through November) is arguably the best time to visit — warm water, comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and the island's festival season. Winter (December through February) is quiet and mild, with excellent birding, uncrowded beaches, and lower accommodation rates.

02

Getting around the island

Hilton Head Island is about 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, and a car is the most practical way to get around for most visitors. Traffic on US-278 (William Hilton Parkway) can be heavy during peak summer hours, particularly around the Cross Island Parkway interchange. The island's 60-plus miles of paved bike paths offer a car-free alternative for many destinations — biking from a mid-island rental to Coligny Beach or Shelter Cove is entirely practical. Rideshare services operate on the island. Taxis and shuttle services are available for airport transfers from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

03

What to pack

Hilton Head's subtropical climate means sun protection is essential year-round. Pack high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective clothing for beach days. The island's dress code is resort casual — shorts and sundresses are appropriate almost everywhere. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the nature trails and bike paths. A light jacket or layer is useful for air-conditioned restaurants and cooler evenings in spring and fall. If you're planning water activities, water shoes are helpful at some beach access points. Insect repellent is useful for marsh walks and evening outdoor activities.

04

Local knowledge and etiquette

Hilton Head has a strong conservation ethic — respect the dunes, stay on designated beach access paths, and never disturb nesting birds or sea turtle nests (marked with orange stakes on the beach from May through October). The island's gated resort communities (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard) charge a vehicle entry fee for non-guests; biking or walking in avoids the fee. Tipping is standard at restaurants and for service providers. The island's pace is deliberately relaxed — embrace it. The best Hilton Head experiences happen when you slow down and let the island set the tempo.

Travel tips questions

What is the best time of year to visit Hilton Head Island?

Fall (September through November) is often considered the best time to visit — warm water, comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and the island's festival season. Spring is also excellent. Summer is peak season with the best beach weather but the most crowds and highest prices.

Do I need a car on Hilton Head Island?

A car is the most practical option for most visitors, but the island's bike path network makes it possible to get around without one if you're staying near the main activity areas. Rideshare services are available.

What should I pack for a Hilton Head vacation?

High-SPF sunscreen, a hat, resort casual clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for evenings and air-conditioned spaces, and insect repellent for marsh walks. Water shoes are helpful at some beach access points.

Are there sea turtles on Hilton Head Island?

Yes. Loggerhead sea turtles nest on Hilton Head's beaches from May through October. Nests are marked with orange stakes. It is illegal to disturb nests, hatchlings, or nesting turtles. Lights on the beach at night can disorient hatchlings — keep lights off or use red-filtered lights near the beach during nesting season.
